Shopping for a wedding dress comes with lots of decisions. The biggest question might be when should you start the process. How soon is too soon? How late is too late? Truthfully, it really depends on several factors. These include how complicated your style or look is, your engagement to wedding timeline, and your desire to go through the process. We’re going to take a closer look at these timelines below. Do you need a reliable Raleigh catering company for a wedding in 2019? A Timeline for Wedding Dress Shopping
The majority of the data we’ve seen states that most engagements last about 14 months. This leaves you plenty of time to shop for a wedding dress.
As a rule of thumb, starting your dress shopping process nine months before the wedding is ideal. This gives you time to breathe and plan without feeling rushed. You will need some time to make your look come together. Starting early will allow for more time for multiple bridal salon visits (which there will be), fittings, alterations, custom details, and dealing with any unforeseen fixes that could come up.
Don’t procrastinate and wait until the last minute. This is especially true if you are having your wedding gown made from scratch. A bespoke dress often takes a lot of time to create and is very time consuming for you as well. You’ll have to plan for several design consultations to get your look down, fabric viewings, and multiple fitting sessions. Other considerations for allowing for more time include made-to-measure and made-to-order gowns as well. We’ll explain the differences between these types of gowns in our next post.
If you’re getting married in three to six months then your time frame for shopping for a wedding dress is significantly smaller. You need to make this list item one of your top priorities and get started as soon as possible. You’re probably not going to have the time to go for a full custom designed dress so you’ll need to look for an off-the-rack option that will not require extensive alterations. Don’t fret though, you’ll still have plenty of time to find a gown that you’ll love just the same.
If you are getting married two years from now, don’t rush out and buy a dress. A lot of things can change within a two year time frame and you’ll create a few more tasks that you’ll have to deal with. For instance, if you rush right out and buy a dress now then you’ll have to store it until you get closer to your wedding day. You could also change your mind about the style of dress of you like. This means you’ll have to sell your existing dress and start the process all over again. We suggest that you wait until 12-9 months out from your wedding day before starting your wedding dress shopping.
