- 1 stick of room temperature butter
- 1/2 cup dark brown sugar
- 1/4 cup light molasses
- 1 tablespoon cinnamon
- 1 tablespoon ground ginger
- 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cloves
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 tablespoons water
Directions – Before you get started, you’ll need to do some prep work. You will want to make templates for your gingerbread house by cutting out the following shapes from paper:
- Two rectangles: 3 by 5 inches – These make the front and back of the house.
- Two rectangles: 3 by 5 1/2 inches – These make the roof.
- Four smaller rectangles: 1 1/2 by 1 inch – These form a nice entryway – roof and sides.
- Two pieces for the house ends or sides: 3 inches wide at the base, 3 inches to the roof line, and slanted to a peak 5 1/2 inches from the bottom.
- One piece: 2 inches wide at the base, 1 1/2 inches to the roof line, and slanted to a peak 2 1/2 inches from the bottom for the front of the entryway.
First, cream the butter. Next, take the creamed butter, brown sugar, molasses, cinnamon, ginger, cloves and baking soda and mix them all together in a large bowl until the mixture is smooth. Now take the flour and blend it in with water. This will make the dough stiff. You’ll need to chill the dough for at least 30 minutes, or until it feels nice and firm. Once chilled, preheat your oven to 375 F.
Next, take the chilled gingerbread dough and place it on a rimless cookie sheet and roll out to edges. Take your paper patterns and place them onto the rolled out dough. Take a pizza cutter, or sharp knife and cut around each of the templates leaving them in place, on the cookie sheet. Bake at 375 degrees F for about 15 minutes, or until the dough is firm. Take them out of the oven and place the templates back on top of the prebaked cut marks. Trim the shapes out of the dough with your knife and allow to cool.
Homemade Royal Icing – Making homemade royal icing is really easy. You’ll need:
- 1 pound of sifted powdered sugar
- 1 to 2 large egg whites
- 1 teaspoon of your choice of almond extract, vanilla or lemon juice
- 1 pastry bag with writing tip
Take all of these ingredients and mix them together. Using an electric hand mixer will help speed things up. Mix until the icing is smooth and thin enough to be used in a pastry bag. Taste and add more of your favorite flavoring if needed.
Now take your fresh royal icing and place into pastry bag with the writing tip attached. Pipe the icing onto individual parts of house to make windows, decorate the door, roof and other areas of the house. Allow to harden. Next, use the icing as glue to put the house together. You’ll glue at the corners and place objects as props to allow all the pieces to dry and stick together. This process only takes a few minutes. Continue to use the remaining icing to decorate the gingerbread house by glueing on gumdrops, gummies, and other candies as you’d like.
