Avoid These Foods If You Have IBS

Did you know that about 10 to 15% of the American population suffers from IBS, otherwise known as irritable bowel syndrome. This chronic condition causes gas, bloating, abdominal pains, and even changes in bowel habits. It makes life frustrating for millions of people who have to wrestle with the symptoms on a daily basis.

Unfortunately, there is no current cure for IBS. However, there are certain foods you can avoid to help reduce the pains and symptoms. Foods That Irritate IBS

Dairy – Lactose: Diary foods contain lactose and, in some people, this can cause gas and bloating; especially if the person is lactose intolerant. Dr. Linda Lee is a gastroenterologist as well as the director of the Johns Hopkins Integrative Medicine and Digestive Center. She says that, “70 percent of adults worldwide do not produce large amounts of lactase, an intestinal enzyme that helps break down the sugar in milk.” If you can cannot absorb lactose, and it passes directly into the colon, the bacteria will ferment and cause gas. Try to avoid as much dairy as you can to prevent IBS symptoms.

Caffeine and Coffee: Sad news for coffee lovers who suffer from IBS – the caffeine can increase diarrhea. Other high sources of caffeine like, tea, cola drinks, chocolate and over the counter headache pills such as Excedrin can also irritate IBS. Cut back to decaf to feel better.

Avoid Foods High in Fructose or HFC: We all know that processed and artificially sweetened foods as well as soda and other juice type drinks contain high fructose corn syrup, which can cause bloating. However, even some healthy foods contain high levels of naturally occurring sugar fructose as well. Fruits like apples, pears and and dried fruits can actually trigger the same symptoms as undigested lactose. Dr. Lee says, “The best thing to do is to eat more fruits that don’t contain as much fructose like berries, citrus and bananas.”
