Don’t Try Too Hard to Be a Comedian
You should definitely try to be funny, but don’t try too hard. You don’t want to push the boundaries just to get a laugh. It’s okay to tell a funny story from her childhood years, but do not bring up an embarrassing situation that involved her ex-boyfriend. In fact, be sure to leave ex-boyfriends out of everything.
Don’t Be Too Embarrassing
One of the greatest gifts to parents is the right to embarrass their children. However, don’t take it too far during your father of the bride speech. If your story is going to make her cringe, find something else to talk about. Even if you’re the funniest person you know, don’t roast your daughter at her wedding reception.
Include the New Spouse
While she is your daughter, she did just get married. Be sure to say something nice about her new spouse and your new in-laws.
Say Thanks to Your Guests and Wife
Be sure to thank everyone for attending. You can fit this in during your opening or closing remarks. Just don’t forget to thank your wife for all of her hard work as well.
Advice, Wisdom, and Wishes
As you close your speech, be sure to finish with some marriage advice, some wisdom from your many years of being a parent, and sincere wishes for the newlyweds to find joy and happiness.
If your daughter is getting married, be sure to go back and read the other posts in this series. You’ll find lots of helpful information that includes a list of all of your responsibilities, making a budget, working through your emotions, and more.
