The History of Our Wedding Traditions
The Bride’s Veil – In today’s modern weddings, the bride wears a veil to look elegant and more beautiful. However, this tradition is also an old one dating back to the ancient Greeks and Romans. They believed that the veil would protect the bride from evil spirits attending the wedding that would try to curse the couple. In Victorian times, the bridal veil transformed into a symbol of wealth.
Giving the Bride Away – If you’ve been to any weddings, you’re probably familiar with the tradition of the father of the bride walking his daughter down the aisle and giving her away to her new husband as part of the ceremony. This is one of the most emotional and touching parts of the wedding, but this one also has a weird history.
Back when this tradition was first started, daughters were considered property and fathers would routinely use them as a form of currency. If the family had a lot of debt, or wanted to advance in social status, the daughters were usually used in the transaction. The father would transfer ownership of the daughter to her groom. In most of our modern civilizations, this practice has long been forgotten and now is a symbol of the parent’s blessing the new union.
