For Women over 50, Diet Drinks Could Be Harmful to Your Health

Posted in: Catering Company

Way back in the day sodas were invented to serve as a health drink. They were filled with medicinal ingredients and were popular at the pharmacies. In 1952, the first diet soda was created as a drink for diabetics not for dieters. Overtime, more diet sodas flooded the market. Now let’s jump forward to present day. Two-thirds of adults and one-third of all children in the US are overweight or obese and experts agree that soda and other sugary drinks have played a big role. Diet drinks have health concerns too, especially for women over the age of 50. Let’s take a closer look. If you’re searching for the best catering companies Raleigh NC has to offer this summer, call Catering by Design. We offer big savings, awesome customer service, and great tasting food.

Stroke, a journal of the American Heart Association, recently published a new study with some alarming stats. Researchers concluded that among post-menopausal women, drinking two or more diet drinks per day was associated with an increase in the risk of having a stroke caused by a blocked artery.

A group of 81,714 women (age 50 to 79 years) participated in the Women’s Health Initiative Observational Study to see if there were any correlations between drinking artificially sweetened beverages and risks of specific types of stroke in a large, racially diverse group of post-menopausal women. Women who drank two or more artificially sweetened beverages per day were:

  • 31% more likely to have a clot-caused (ischemic) stroke
  • 29% more likely to develop heart disease (fatal or non-fatal heart attack)
  • 23% more likely to have a stroke
  • 16% more likely to die from any cause

For some groups of women over the age of 50, the risks were even higher:

  • Obese women without previous heart disease or diabetes were 2.03 times as likely to have a clot-caused stroke.
  • Women with no previous heart disease or diabetes were 2.44 times at risk of having a common type of stroke caused by a blockage of one of the very small arteries within the brain.
  • African-American women without previous heart disease or diabetes were 3.93 times as likely to have a clot-caused stroke.

Tips for Eating More Leftovers

Posted in: Catering Company

Leftovers are a win-win situation. However, there are many people that are really not in love with the idea of eating the same meal more than once a week. That’s a shame because leftovers require little to no effort, are less expensive than eating out, remove clutter from the fridge, and reduce food waste. Here’s some helpful advice on how to step up your leftover game. If you’re searching for the best event caterers Raleigh NC has to offer this summer, call Catering by Design today for big savings. You’ll love our food, attention to detail, and unbeatable prices. Call now to learn more.

Recipes for Better Leftovers

When it comes to eating more leftovers we have to understand that some just taste better than others. Start by planning recipes that make great leftover meals. Stews, pasta, casseroles, all make for great leftover meals. Fish and seafood, not so much. Planning out your meals to encourage eating more leftovers is a step in the right direction.

Cook for Leftovers

Once you’ve determined which meals you’ll enjoy the next day or two, prep your recipes by doubling or tripling the ingredients. This will ensure that you have enough leftover food to provide you and your family with extra meals.

Use Leftovers in Other Recipes

If you find that you don’t have enough leftovers for an extra meal then reuse what you do have in a different recipe. Leftover meats and veggies might pair well in a breakfast omelet or frittata. Leftover nuts, grated cheese, hard boiled eggs, and prepped veggies could go into a great salad. If you have leftover bits of meat, grains, vegetables, legumes, and tomatoes consider making a soup. If you have lots of bones left over then make some tasty homemade stock. Extra cooked rice from the night before can be transformed into fried rice with the addition of some veggies and whatever protein you have laying around. Leftover stale bread is perfect for bread pudding.

If you need some inspiration on what to make with your leftovers take a minute and head on over to this nifty website. You can add three ingredients to their tool and it will kick back a list of great recipes for you to try. You have lots of options for getting creative with your leftovers to save you time and money.

Keep Leftovers in Clear Containers

Out of sight, out of mind. Don’t store your leftovers in containers you cannot see into. Also, do not push them into the back of the fridge where you cannot see them. You’ll eventually forget about them and your extra efforts will be moot. Keep your leftovers in see through containers and store them at the front of your fridge for easy access.

Buy a Good Thermos

Speaking of storing leftovers, invest in a good working thermos. Some leftover meals taste way better when they are hot, not cold. This is especially a good idea for those working in jobs without access to microwaves and for your children when packing lunch for school. A good thermos will pay for itself after a couple of uses compared with the costs of eating out.

Have a Leftover Buffet

Once a week treat your entire family to a leftover buffet of all the meals and containers you have piling up in the fridge. Put everything out on the table in nice serving dishes and let all the members of your family choose what they want to finish off. Set out an abundance of condiments, seasonings, and sauces, and even offer to prepare a few side dishes to encourage participation.

Pickle/Caper Juice

The juice from pickles and capers is a great addition to many recipes. You can use caper juice in dips like tapenade and olivada, seafood dishes, and pasta sauces. Pickle juice pairs well with potato salad, egg salad, coleslaw, tuna salad, Bloody Marys, pasta salad, and more. You can also use the juices in soups like borscht or gazpacho, or with veggies like green beans, beets, kale, and cabbage.

Pineapple Core

A pineapple’s core is totally edible but most people throw it away. Even though the core doesn’t have the same succulent texture of the rest of the pineapple, it’s still just as delicious. The core also hides one of the pineapple’s most beneficial nutrients, bromelain. Bromelain is a proteolytic enzyme that breaks down proteins to help aid with digestion. Dice up the core and use it in marinades, salsas, and smoothies.

How to Recycle Your Wedding Items for Future Use

Posted in: Catering Company, Wedding Catering Raleigh

Weddings are exciting but also expensive. After your wedding is over you’ll have lots of leftovers like decor, your wedding attire, and more. In today’s post we have some great ideas on how you can recycle and reuse your wedding things. Searching for affordable Raleigh wedding catering for a 2019 reception? Call the pros at Catering by Design. We have the best options for Triangle weddings, corporate meetings, banquets, social events, birthday parties, and more.

Raleigh Wedding Catering

Recycling Your Wedding Items

Decorations

Keep your wedding decorations and use them to decorate your home. You can also use them for parties or other get-togethers. We’ve used several of our wedding decorations for our daughter’s birthday parties. You can also sell them to recoup some of your money back. Furthermore, you can re-gift them during the holidays! Photo frames, vases, and candle holders all make great gifts.

Wedding Favors

Do you have a lot of leftover wedding favors? Getting rid of them might be a little tricky depending on what they are. If they’re edible with a short shelf life, be sure to give some to your onsite wedding vendors to put a dent in your collection. You can also encourage your guests to take a few extras home with them. You can also give more out to family and friends during your day after brunch.

Shoes

If you wore white shoes for your wedding day think about having them dyed a different color for future use. You can also try selling them online or donating them.

Wedding Gown

Don’t let your wedding gown sit in the closet collecting dust. Have a seamstress or tailor transform it into a fancy cocktail dress. You can also have it remade into a beautiful dress for your daughter or niece. You can also sell it or donate it to a needy bride as well.

Affordable 2019 Raleigh Wedding Catering

The Luckiest Foods to Eat on New Year’s Day

Eat Greens for Good Fortune

Want good fortune in 2019? Eat greens! You can serve collards, mustard greens, or turnip greens.

Golden Cornbread

Cornbread is a southern staple. If you eat cornbread on New Year’s Day it’s to represent future good fortune and a golden financial opportunity.

Pork Brings Positive Progress

Pigs are constantly rooting forward. Eating ham or other pork on New Year’s Day represents making positive forward progress in your life. Some also believe that eating pork on New Year’s Day also means good fortune ahead.

Long Noodles

Eating long noodles, like spaghetti, symbolizes living a long life. Slurping these long noodles on New Year’s Day is also considered to be good luck.

Round Cakes

For New Year’s Day dessert you should eat round cakes for good luck. Round cakes also represents your life coming full circle.

Don’t Eat Chicken or Lobster

Some say that it can be bad luck to eat chicken on New Year’s Day because chickens are always scratching backwards. This represents moving backwards or setbacks instead of making positive life progress.

Lobsters also frequently move backwards, especially when they’re in danger. Therefore you should also avoid eating these.

Avoid white foods as well. In Chinese culture, white is an unlucky color that symbolizes death.

Christmas Tree Safety Tips

Posted in: Catering Company

The holiday season is a magical time of the year and, for many people, Christmas trees always play a major role. People all across the world will be trimming trees with their favorite ornaments, lights, garland, and more. Some even put up multiple trees each Christmas that are decked out with different themes. In my home we usually put up three trees; the main one, my small university tree, and a little pink tree for my daughter. Christmas trees also come in all shapes and sizes. Some are artificial while others are the real deal. Regardless of the type or number of Christmas trees you decorate there are several safety tips you should be aware of. Please keep these tips in mind so you have a safe and accident free holiday this year. For the best prices and options for Raleigh holiday event catering, Catering by Design is number one. Call us today to learn more about our holiday menus and delivery options.

2018 Tips for Christmas Tree Safety

Be sure to test and check your lights and any electronic ornaments before putting them on your tree. The National Fire Protection Association says that more than 200 Christmas tree fires happen every year. Most of these are caused by electrical problems with the decoration. If you find any frayed wires or lights that are not working properly please dispose of them and buy new sets.

Don’t overload outlets with multiple cords plugged in. Again, this is another electrical fire hazard.

If you have toddlers or small children in the home please consider buying an artificial tree. Artificial Christmas trees do not weigh as much as live trees. If your small child was to accidentally pull the tree over on top of themselves a live one could crush them or severely injure them.

If you have a live or real Christmas tree keep it at least three feet away from heat sources like candles, fireplaces, radiators, or space heaters. This can prematurely dry the tree out or make it catch on fire. Roughly 25% of all Christmas tree fires are caused from being too close to heat sources. Live trees should also be watered daily to keep them from drying out as well. Dried out trees are more likely to catch fire quicker.

In fact, before buying a live Christmas tree from the lot you should pull on the little needles on the limbs. If the tree is already dried out then the needles will shed and release very easily. Avoid buying those as they could become a fire hazard quickly.

We all want our Christmas tree to be located in just the right spot. However, you should not block any entryways or exits with your tree. If there is an emergency in the home during the holidays trying to get around the tree will use up critical minutes.

Turn off all electric lights and decorations before leaving your home and going to bed. Again, most Christmas tree fires come from electrical issues and it’s always better to be safe than sorry.

When the holidays are over you’ll need to go ahead and discard or dispose of your live tree. It’s going to be dried out and a major fire hazard. Don’t hang on to it, store it in your garage, or leave it propped up outside your home. Check with your local city about any recycling programs or pickup services.

From all of us at Catering by Design we hope that you and your family and friends have a wonderful holiday season filled with great memories, lots of fun, and good food. If you need great tasting food for your next holiday event please keep reading to learn why calling Catering by Design is a smart idea.

Fun Games for Fall Wedding Receptions

Corn Hole

Corn hole is a really fun game to have at wedding receptions especially if you have use of an outdoor space. This game can be played by kids and adults. Players can compete one-on-one or as teams. Having personalized corn hole boards is also a really popular wedding trend that we’ve seen over the past few years as well. We suggest having at least two complete sets of boards and bags to make sure no one is standing around waiting to play.

Scavenger Hunt

Having a scavenger hunt is an old-time favorite that will be sure to get your wedding guests up and moving about. The kids will also love this game especially if there’s a prize involved. A scavenger hunt can be played indoors, outdoors, or both. Like we just mentioned, having a few good prizes will be essential for crowd participation and for it to be successful.

How to Prep for a Hurricane like a Pro

Posted in: Catering Company

Hurricane Florence is on her way. Experts say that this massive storm will probably hit the coast of North Carolina in just a few days. More importantly for our area, the storm’s path could lead it right through Raleigh. If you were here for Hurricane Fran way back in 1996, you know that this is serious business. Raleigh, and the surrounding areas, looked like a war zone after Fran moved on. Some were without power for weeks. That’s why we want to make sure you are prepped and ready for Flo. Check out these tips below. If you have an event coming up and need great prices on food and service, call Catering by Design. We offer some of the best prices on catering in Raleigh.

catering in Raleigh

Prepping for a Hurricane

Fill Your Vehicles with Gas

Go ahead and make sure all of your vehicles have a full tank of gasoline. If the power goes out, the fuel pumps will no longer work. Some people were without power for a few weeks after Hurricane Fran and that can mean access to gas will be difficult. Don’t leave yourself stranded in case there’s an emergency and you need to drive somewhere.

Water

Raleigh is currently in a panic and residents are hoarding water. The shelves at most stores are bare even though more deliveries are expected over the next few days. Take this time to go ahead and start filling up your reusable containers at your home. Freeze several gallon Ziploc bags as well. This will help keep some items cool and will provide drinkable water when it thaws. Fill your tubs full of water the night before the storm hits. This will help provide drinkable water, cooking water, and water to flush your toilets with.

Batteries

Batteries for flashlights or other electric items are also a necessity. Flashlights and battery powered lanterns are a safer alternative to burning candles. Furthermore, candles will generate heat. If the power goes out then so does your AC. Don’t make your home hotter by burning candles.

Diapers and Wipes

If you have children that are still in diapers go ahead and stock up. Buy some extra packs of wipes also. You can also use baby wipes to help refresh the rest of your household as well. If you cannot bathe for a few days you’ll at least be able to clean yourselves with these.

Nonperishable Food

Buy some food that will not spoil without refrigeration. Canned meats, veggies, and fruit are always a great place to start. Make sure you have plenty of bread, peanut butter, and jelly. Also buy some snacks, especially if you have kids. Chips, trail mix, Pop-Tarts, popcorn, crackers, and cookies will all help pass the time by. For the adults who have to have their coffee, buy instant coffee. We use instant coffee when we go camping and it’s really not that bad. It’s not gourmet but you’ll be able to get your fix.

If you have a newborn then don’t forget about them either. Buy some powdered milk also in case you cannot keep real milk cold. The same goes for your pets as well.

Eat Perishable Foods First

If the power does go out then your refrigerator is going to be useless. All the cold and perishable food will eventually spoil. For some people, this can be very costly. If the power goes out and you must open the fridge, do so as little as possible and for really short periods of time. Get out the things that will spoil first and make eating them a priority. This will save you money in the long run.

Propane and Charcoal

If you have an outside grill then now is the time to make sure you have plenty of propane or charcoal on hand. If you lose power for a few days and your stove is electric you’re not going to have an easy way to cook food. Camping stoves are also handy for prepping for a hurricane.

Help Your Neighbors

In closing, be mindful and help your neighbors. We are all in this together and we will need to help each other out in times of emergencies and disaster. Look out for one another and be open to helping out those that need it the most.
