Hunger in the Triangle Area of North Carolina

For years Catering by Design has been donating food that was not used at events to one of several organizations that feed the hungry, some living on the streets, others, just not having enough income to buy groceries. We freeze the  trays of food and they are picked up frozen.

The Church in the Woods is one of those organizations serving the hungry. Frequently our wedding couples, and our corporate customers are pleased to have the chance to share what they didn’t use.

Alice McGee is the director of Church in the Woods and reaches out to people who are homeless. They serve food at every event and service they hold.

In Chatham County where Chef Greg Lewis lives, the CORA Food Pantry plays an active role in seeing that no one goes hungry. During the school year schools help children with a Back Pack program that sends children home with food for the weekend in a back pack. CORA estimates that 50% of school children in Chatham County get subsidized food. During the summer these children are especially vulnerable, so a new program that started in 2009, called The Snack! Program helps.

Farmer Food Share is another organization in Chatham County that seeks to address hunger. They tell stories of the people they help. They connect the people who grow food with the people who are hungry.

While Cary, North Carolina, where Catering-by-Design has its office is considered a wealthy town, in a relatively wealthier county, Wake County, still there is a need for hunger support. The 2008 economic recession was severe enough that people lost their jobs, and their homes, and income enough to  feed their families.

In April 2013, Cary News reported the story of a young man named Greg Ng who is using his celebrity as a frozen food reviewer on YouTube to make it easier for people to participate in ending hunger; he raised $20,000 at a telethon for the Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina.

Dan Philips of No Kid Hungry is running across North Carolina – over 650 miles, in 2 marathon length runs a weekend. On April 21, 2013 he was only 75 miles from Wrightsville Beach! Dan has raised over $1,000 so far. The site reports that 1 in 4 children in North Carolina go hungry.

The Interfaith Food Shuttle is another organization in the Triangle working to address the hunger issues in the central North Carolina counties it serves.

If you know someone who doesn’t get enough to eat, call this National Hunger Hotline at https://whyhunger.org/find-food/ at 1.866.348.6479 and find out what resources are available nearby.
