2018 Halloween Trick-or-Treating Safety Tips
Keep It Familiar
As a parent, you want your kids to have a fun trick-or-treating adventure. To keep it safe and fun, stick with what you know. Don’t risk going into neighborhoods that you aren’t familiar with. You’ll eventually lose time for your kids by trying to figure out where to go and what routes to take. This will make you stressed out and your kids will be upset as well.
Going into a unfamiliar neighborhoods could also pose some safety risks as well. Do not venture into high-crime neighborhoods. Here’s a great resource to see what kinds of crimes are happening in your local neighborhoods. Just type in the street name, city, and state to get the information. You should also avoid houses that do not have a porch light on as well as dimly lit areas.
Go with Your Younger Kids
If you have younger kids you’ll want to go out walking with them. This will allow you to keep them from darting out into the middle of the street in front of a car. You’ll also be able to protect them from older kids that might be into bullying. Also, be sure to stay on the sidewalks at all times and avoid walking in the middle of the street if possible.
If you have older kids then you can give them a little more freedom, especially if they’re going out with friends. However, be sure to set boundaries. Make sure your older child either has a phone or will be with someone with a phone in case of an emergency. Make sure you know where your older kids will be going and who they’ll be trick-or-treating with.
This time of the year the days are getting shorter and it is getting darker a lot earlier. Since most trick-or-treating activities take place at dusk or at night it’s very important to stay visible. When you and your kids are out walking the streets of your neighborhood during Halloween in search of candy there are several things you can do to help others see you.
Here is a list of helpful options.
- Carry a flashlight or wear a headlamp.
- Wear glow sticks, glow necklaces, or use other glow accessories.
- Use reflective tape on your clothes, costumes, and candy bags/pumpkins.
