The holiday season is a magical time of the year and, for many people, Christmas trees always play a major role. People all across the world will be trimming trees with their favorite ornaments, lights, garland, and more. Some even put up multiple trees each Christmas that are decked out with different themes. In my home we usually put up three trees; the main one, my small university tree, and a little pink tree for my daughter. Christmas trees also come in all shapes and sizes. Some are artificial while others are the real deal. Regardless of the type or number of Christmas trees you decorate there are several safety tips you should be aware of. Please keep these tips in mind so you have a safe and accident free holiday this year. For the best prices and options for Raleigh holiday event catering, Catering by Design is number one. 2018 Tips for Christmas Tree Safety
Be sure to test and check your lights and any electronic ornaments before putting them on your tree. The National Fire Protection Association says that more than 200 Christmas tree fires happen every year. Most of these are caused by electrical problems with the decoration. If you find any frayed wires or lights that are not working properly please dispose of them and buy new sets.
Don’t overload outlets with multiple cords plugged in. Again, this is another electrical fire hazard.
If you have toddlers or small children in the home please consider buying an artificial tree. Artificial Christmas trees do not weigh as much as live trees. If your small child was to accidentally pull the tree over on top of themselves a live one could crush them or severely injure them.
If you have a live or real Christmas tree keep it at least three feet away from heat sources like candles, fireplaces, radiators, or space heaters. This can prematurely dry the tree out or make it catch on fire. Roughly 25% of all Christmas tree fires are caused from being too close to heat sources. Live trees should also be watered daily to keep them from drying out as well. Dried out trees are more likely to catch fire quicker.
In fact, before buying a live Christmas tree from the lot you should pull on the little needles on the limbs. If the tree is already dried out then the needles will shed and release very easily. Avoid buying those as they could become a fire hazard quickly.
We all want our Christmas tree to be located in just the right spot. However, you should not block any entryways or exits with your tree. If there is an emergency in the home during the holidays trying to get around the tree will use up critical minutes.
Turn off all electric lights and decorations before leaving your home and going to bed. Again, most Christmas tree fires come from electrical issues and it’s always better to be safe than sorry.
When the holidays are over you’ll need to go ahead and discard or dispose of your live tree. It’s going to be dried out and a major fire hazard. Don’t hang on to it, store it in your garage, or leave it propped up outside your home. Check with your local city about any recycling programs or pickup services.
