Christmas Tree Safety Tips

Posted in: Catering Company

The holiday season is a magical time of the year and, for many people, Christmas trees always play a major role. People all across the world will be trimming trees with their favorite ornaments, lights, garland, and more. Some even put up multiple trees each Christmas that are decked out with different themes. In my home we usually put up three trees; the main one, my small university tree, and a little pink tree for my daughter. Christmas trees also come in all shapes and sizes. Some are artificial while others are the real deal. Regardless of the type or number of Christmas trees you decorate there are several safety tips you should be aware of. Please keep these tips in mind so you have a safe and accident free holiday this year. For the best prices and options for Raleigh holiday event catering, Catering by Design is number one. Call us today to learn more about our holiday menus and delivery options.

2018 Tips for Christmas Tree Safety

Be sure to test and check your lights and any electronic ornaments before putting them on your tree. The National Fire Protection Association says that more than 200 Christmas tree fires happen every year. Most of these are caused by electrical problems with the decoration. If you find any frayed wires or lights that are not working properly please dispose of them and buy new sets.

Don’t overload outlets with multiple cords plugged in. Again, this is another electrical fire hazard.

If you have toddlers or small children in the home please consider buying an artificial tree. Artificial Christmas trees do not weigh as much as live trees. If your small child was to accidentally pull the tree over on top of themselves a live one could crush them or severely injure them.

If you have a live or real Christmas tree keep it at least three feet away from heat sources like candles, fireplaces, radiators, or space heaters. This can prematurely dry the tree out or make it catch on fire. Roughly 25% of all Christmas tree fires are caused from being too close to heat sources. Live trees should also be watered daily to keep them from drying out as well. Dried out trees are more likely to catch fire quicker.

In fact, before buying a live Christmas tree from the lot you should pull on the little needles on the limbs. If the tree is already dried out then the needles will shed and release very easily. Avoid buying those as they could become a fire hazard quickly.

We all want our Christmas tree to be located in just the right spot. However, you should not block any entryways or exits with your tree. If there is an emergency in the home during the holidays trying to get around the tree will use up critical minutes.

Turn off all electric lights and decorations before leaving your home and going to bed. Again, most Christmas tree fires come from electrical issues and it’s always better to be safe than sorry.

When the holidays are over you’ll need to go ahead and discard or dispose of your live tree. It’s going to be dried out and a major fire hazard. Don’t hang on to it, store it in your garage, or leave it propped up outside your home. Check with your local city about any recycling programs or pickup services.

From all of us at Catering by Design we hope that you and your family and friends have a wonderful holiday season filled with great memories, lots of fun, and good food. If you need great tasting food for your next holiday event please keep reading to learn why calling Catering by Design is a smart idea.

Fun Games for Fall Wedding Receptions

Corn Hole

Corn hole is a really fun game to have at wedding receptions especially if you have use of an outdoor space. This game can be played by kids and adults. Players can compete one-on-one or as teams. Having personalized corn hole boards is also a really popular wedding trend that we’ve seen over the past few years as well. We suggest having at least two complete sets of boards and bags to make sure no one is standing around waiting to play.

Scavenger Hunt

Having a scavenger hunt is an old-time favorite that will be sure to get your wedding guests up and moving about. The kids will also love this game especially if there’s a prize involved. A scavenger hunt can be played indoors, outdoors, or both. Like we just mentioned, having a few good prizes will be essential for crowd participation and for it to be successful.

How to Prep for a Hurricane like a Pro

Posted in: Catering Company

Hurricane Florence is on her way. Experts say that this massive storm will probably hit the coast of North Carolina in just a few days. More importantly for our area, the storm’s path could lead it right through Raleigh. If you were here for Hurricane Fran way back in 1996, you know that this is serious business. Raleigh, and the surrounding areas, looked like a war zone after Fran moved on. Some were without power for weeks. That’s why we want to make sure you are prepped and ready for Flo. Check out these tips below. If you have an event coming up and need great prices on food and service, call Catering by Design. We offer some of the best prices on catering in Raleigh.

catering in Raleigh

Prepping for a Hurricane

Fill Your Vehicles with Gas

Go ahead and make sure all of your vehicles have a full tank of gasoline. If the power goes out, the fuel pumps will no longer work. Some people were without power for a few weeks after Hurricane Fran and that can mean access to gas will be difficult. Don’t leave yourself stranded in case there’s an emergency and you need to drive somewhere.

Raleigh is currently in a panic and residents are hoarding water. The shelves at most stores are bare even though more deliveries are expected over the next few days. Take this time to go ahead and start filling up your reusable containers at your home. Freeze several gallon Ziploc bags as well. This will help keep some items cool and will provide drinkable water when it thaws. Fill your tubs full of water the night before the storm hits. This will help provide drinkable water, cooking water, and water to flush your toilets with.

Batteries for flashlights or other electric items are also a necessity. Flashlights and battery powered lanterns are a safer alternative to burning candles. Furthermore, candles will generate heat. If the power goes out then so does your AC. Don’t make your home hotter by burning candles.

Diapers and Wipes

If you have children that are still in diapers go ahead and stock up. Buy some extra packs of wipes also. You can also use baby wipes to help refresh the rest of your household as well. If you cannot bathe for a few days you’ll at least be able to clean yourselves with these.

Nonperishable Food

Buy some food that will not spoil without refrigeration. Canned meats, veggies, and fruit are always a great place to start. Make sure you have plenty of bread, peanut butter, and jelly. Also buy some snacks, especially if you have kids. Chips, trail mix, Pop-Tarts, popcorn, crackers, and cookies will all help pass the time by. For the adults who have to have their coffee, buy instant coffee. We use instant coffee when we go camping and it’s really not that bad. It’s not gourmet but you’ll be able to get your fix.

If you have a newborn then don’t forget about them either. Buy some powdered milk also in case you cannot keep real milk cold. The same goes for your pets as well.

Eat Perishable Foods First

If the power does go out then your refrigerator is going to be useless. All the cold and perishable food will eventually spoil. For some people, this can be very costly. If the power goes out and you must open the fridge, do so as little as possible and for really short periods of time. Get out the things that will spoil first and make eating them a priority. This will save you money in the long run.

Propane and Charcoal

If you have an outside grill then now is the time to make sure you have plenty of propane or charcoal on hand. If you lose power for a few days and your stove is electric you’re not going to have an easy way to cook food. Camping stoves are also handy for prepping for a hurricane.

Help Your Neighbors

In closing, be mindful and help your neighbors. We are all in this together and we will need to help each other out in times of emergencies and disaster. Look out for one another and be open to helping out those that need it the most.

Reset Routines at Least One Week Prior to School

Switching over from a summer schedule to a school schedule can be tricky for any kid. That’s why you really need to reset routines at least a week before school starts back to give your child time to adjust. Have them go to bed earlier and get up earlier as well. In the mornings, go through the getting ready routine like getting dressed, eating breakfast, brushing teeth, etc.

Make a One-Page Profile of Your Student

Prepare a single paged profile of your student to introduce him or her to the school employees, teachers, bus drivers, after-school staff, etc. This will help the staff get to know your child better and what to expect from your son or daughter. Include your child’s strengths, weaknesses, and interests. Also add a photo of them.

Practice Opening a Combination Lock

If your child is moving to a grade that will require using a locker, it is a really good idea to practice opening and closing a combination lock to get them familiar with how one works. It’s also a good idea to show him or her pictures of what an actual locker looks like with a backpack hanging up and all the books, folders, etc. inside.

Back-to-School Tips for Parents of High School Students

Set the Tone Early

As a parent, you will need to focus on setting the right tone early on, within the first couple of weeks of school. Pay special attention to them these first few weeks. Communicate with your children about their day, what they like and don’t like, and any problem areas they foresee for the rest of the year, etc.

Managing Time

High school is all about getting prepared for adulthood. Whether they’re going to college, the military, a trade school, or starting a full-time job, they will need to know how to manage their time effectively. It’s your job to help them set up the right schedule that will allow them to be successful with time management. A good schedule and routine will also help reduce their stress levels. Make sure that your child has adequate study time, family time, gets to sleep at a decent hour, and still has time for all the fun stuff they want to do.

Managing Stress

High school is stressful for your son or daughter. Helping them manage that stress is key to a successful year. Start the day off by making sure they’re up early enough not to feel rushed. If they’re already feeling like they’re going to be late, that sets a negative tone for the rest of the day.

Be sure you understand the signs of stress. These can include problems sleeping, changes in eating habits, a short temper, depression, and worrying about or fixating on something for a long period of time.

Post-Wedding Day Blues Explained

Jocelyn Charnas is a clinical psychologist and premarital counselor. She says “[It] happens when couples experience a period of letdown following the excitement of planning the wedding.” As unreasonable as it sounds to feel sad and down in the dumps following getting married and enjoying a honeymoon, it’s fairly common for many people to experience emotional highs and lows after positive life-changing events.

The symptoms of post-wedding day blues can include some of feelings included in the following list. Be sure to be on the lookout for these:

  • Boredom
  • Sadness
  • Lethargy
  • Loneliness
  • Isolation

Couples, and even the parents of the bride and groom, can go through spells of post-wedding depression for many reasons. Some of these feelings revolve around fact that all the love, focus, and attention is no longer focused solely on you. There is no more exciting wedding day planning left to accomplish. Plus, you now have to settle down and plan for the future. It’s time to start thinking about major life decisions like buying a house, starting a family, etc.

So how do you fight off the post-wedding day blues? Be sure to join us for our next post where you’ll find some helpful tips that will help you get through this low point. Fighting Off Pre-Wedding Depression

Take a Break

Sure, there is a ton of stuff to get checked off of your to-do list before the wedding. It’s overwhelming at times. So be sure to take a much needed break whenever you start feeling like you’re going crazy. Breaks give you a chance to refocus and breathe. Take an hour, a day, or even a week to recharge your brain. When you’re taking a break, do something fun and relaxing.

You really do not have to do everything yourself to get the perfect wedding. There are probably lots of things on your checklist that can be delegated to your groom, trusted friends, or family members. This will free up your time to focus on other items that you feel are the most important. When delegating items, be clear with what you want and use good communication.

Don’t Skip the Pre-marital Counseling

Pre-marital counseling is something not to be overlooked. This will give you and your partner a chance to really talk in a safe and neutral environment. Let’s face it, most of us struggle to have hard conversations with our loved ones. Pre-marital counseling is an opportunity to do exactly this so you’re not putting your head in the sand when and if things get bumpy along the way.

Try Yoga

Yoga is a great way to center your mind, body, and soul. It’s also really great exercise to work all that pent up stress out. Yoga is calming, so give it a try!

Teaching Your Child Cooking Skills Is Important

Any Kitchen Will Do

Teach your children that they do not need a kitchen like their parents’ to cook a good meal. Any kitchen with a working stove, oven, and refrigerator will do. Do make sure your child is equipped with the basics like pots, pans, baking dishes, slow cooker, cutting boards, storage containers, etc.

Take Them Grocery Shopping

If they’re going to learn to cook, they’re going to have to learn how to shop for groceries. Take them with you grocery shopping and teach them. Show them what herbs, sauces, and condiments make the best flavor boosters. Show them what fruits and vegetables can be kept for a long time and which ones spoil the quickest. Teach them how to compare labels, prices, and finding the best deals.

Start with Basic Recipes

Once you get in the kitchen, start them off with easy and basic recipes. This will help them build a good foundation to work from and will give them confidence that they really can learn how to cook. Have them start preparing simple meals for the family to get extra practice.

Do you want an awesome catering experience for an upcoming business meeting, social event, or wedding? Read on to see why you should call Catering by Design to save time and money.

Costs Associated with Being a Bridesmaid

Bridal Shower

If you’re a bridesmaid, it’s customary to attend the shower. However, if you live outside of driving distance you can skip it. Costs seem to vary for this one. Some bridesmaids chip in on the costs of the shower and others just bring a gift. Expect to spend anywhere between $0 and $100.00.

Bachelorette Party

The costs of attending a bachelorette party also vary in price depending on where you’re going and what you’re doing. A night out on the town is going to cost less than a weekend getaway. Some bachelorette parties also take place in expensive cities like Las Vegas, Miami, and NYC where the cost of airfare, hotel, food, and party money can easily be a $1,000.00 per person.

Dress, Shoes, Makeup, Etc.

A bridesmaid dress will typically cost around $150.00. Shoes can be anywhere between $100-$200.00. Makeup, manicure, and pedicure can run between $100 and $150.00. Good Spanx shapeware can also cost between $60 – $100. If you’re adding in a spray tan, that can cost another $25 – $50.00.

Wedding Weekend

If you’re flying then plan on spending at least a few hundred dollars on airfare. Food, drinks, and snacks for the weekend can easily cost another $100 or more. The wedding gift can cost you between $25 and $100.00. A hotel room is also going to cost you a few hundred as well, unless you’re splitting the cost with another friend.

Being a bridesmaid can be pretty expensive but the memories you’ll make with your friends will be priceless.

All-Time Best Wedding Movies

My Big Fat Greek Wedding

Number one on our list still holds the record as the highest grossing wedding rom-com movie of all time. It hit the big screen in 2002 and is based on a play by Nia Vardalos. The movie is focused on one Greek woman’s attempts to get her traditional family to accept her non-Greek love interest.

Bridesmaids debuted in 2011. It might be one of the best R-rated female-driven comedies to hit the big screen in the last decade. The movie stars actresses Kristen Wiig, Rose Byrne, Maya Rudolph, Ellie Kemper, Melissa McCarthy, and Wendi McLendon-Covey. Bridesmaids earned two Oscar nominations, Best Original Screenplay and Best Supporting Actress.

Wedding Crashers

This one is for all the guys out there. Wedding Crashers once held the record for the highest opening for a R-rated comedy and was a huge box-office success. The movie starred Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn and also featured breakthrough performances from Bradley Cooper and Isla Fisher.

Father of the Bride

Even though this movie is 27 years old, it makes me laugh every single time I watch it. This movie is rated PG and is great for the whole family to watch. Steve Martin plays the role of George Banks alongside Diane Keaton playing the role of his wife, Nina. They’re the proud parents of Annie Banks played by Kimberly Williams. Annie returns from studying overseas only to announce that she is engaged. From that point on, George’s world gets turned upside down.
