Over the past few entries we have been discussing ditching the traditional New Year’s resolutions and replacing them with ones focused on cooking and being in the kitchen. In part one we talked about cooking more at home instead of eating out, investing in a great knife and how to keep it sharp, and more. Our last post was centered around one resolution: teaching your kids how to cook and shop for groceries. Below we will be rounding out the series with our final cooking and kitchen New Year’s resolutions. Are you searching for the very best Cary wedding catering with affordable reception packages and a vast menu selection? Catering by Design can help. Call us today to learn more about the services that we offer or to schedule your tasting!
Cooking and Kitchen New Year’s Resolutions for 2019
Learn How to Bake Homemade Bread
Homemade bread is very easy to make. It can also save you some money over the course of a year. Making your own bread is also a lot healthier. The bread you buy in the store is packed full of preservatives and other unhealthy things. Baking bread takes about an hour. If you’d like an easy recipe to follow check out this post we wrote last January.
Go Meatless at Least Once a Week
Cook at least one meal per week that does not include meat. Not only is eating less meat better for your health, but it’s also better for your wallet. You’ll be surprised at how much money you can save by using limited animal products in your recipes. If you have children, serving some vegetarian dishes will also help to expose them to a wider variety of foods as well.
Try Foods from Different Cultures
It’s probably fair game to say that you’ve tried some dishes from other cultures. Mexican, Italian, Chinese, Japanese dishes are all fairly common and available. Step out of your comfort zone in 2019 and expand your food horizons by trying Greek, Thai, Middle Eastern, Ethiopian, Swedish, Indian, Korean, and other foods that you are not familiar with. Take this food related resolution up a notch and also learn how to cook a few of these dishes from other cultures. Here is a list of 80 recipes from other countries that will help you get started.
Pickle Something for Later
Pickling is the process of preserving food through fermentation. You can pickle pretty much any solid fruit or vegetable. Pickling is also pretty easy as well. Pickling is a fantastic way to preserve and enhance produce when it’s in peak season for later. You can pickle cucumbers, okra, green beans, corn, carrots, and more.
Learn How to Make Your Own Salad Dressings
Here’s another great resolution you should make in the new year, learning how to make different homemade salad dressings. Store bought salad dressings are high in calories and bad fats. They’re also full of preservatives and other chemicals to extend their shelf life and often use poor quality, cheap ingredients. Making your own is healthier and cheaper in the long run.
Take a Cooking Class
If you are lacking in the cooking skills department then sign up for a few cooking classes. If you do enough research you might be able to even find a few free ones offered by different groups or clubs in your city. You’ll find all different types of cooking classes for all skill levels.
We wish you and your family a wonderful 2019 filled with great food and joy. Be sure to visit back with the previous posts in this series to read about the other cooking and kitchen related New Year’s resolutions we covered.

However there are some cooking and kitchen resolutions that you can make and keep all year long. We talked about a few of these in our last post. They included cooking more at home, investing in a great chef’s knife, and making more trips to the local farmers’ market. Below you will find a really important New Year’s cooking related resolution. For affordable Cary business catering, social catering, and wedding catering, please call Catering by Design. We’re standing by to take your call!
Get the Kids Involved in Cooking and Shopping
Make 2019 the year that you really get your children involved with shopping for groceries and cooking food. It’s really never too early to start teaching your kids these skills that will stick with them for life.
Taking your children with you to the grocery store or the farmers’ market will help them learn more about nutrition and grocery spending, plus you can let them pick out things they want to eat or try.
When it comes to cooking, you’re making long lasting memories and teaching your child how to feed themselves without relying on the microwave or eating out when they’re older. For instance, my toddler loves to help us in the kitchen. She has her own tiny mixing whisk and rolling pen. We let her crack eggs, roll out pastries, and a few other things as well. She absolutely loves it.
If you have older children, then you’re also getting an extra set of hands in the kitchen to speed things along. Furthermore, children that know how to cook have more confidence, are more excited about food, and will be better eaters.

Cook More and Eat Out Less
Cooking more at home tops our list! This resolution is healthy and budget friendly. You can lose a lot of weight and eat better foods when you control what you eat by cooking at home. You will also save a lot of money compared to eating out at restaurants for lunch and dinner each week.
Buy a Great Chef’s Knife
Any job is made easier when you’re using the right tools and this includes cooking at home. That is why we think investing in a really good chef’s knife should also be at the top of your cooking and kitchen New Year’s resolutions. Once you get your chef’s knife, make it a point to really understand how to use it. Brush up on your chopping, dicing, and slicing skills. Also learn how to keep it sharp. Here’s a short video from Gordon Ramsay with a few tips: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SBn1i9YqN1k
Make More Trips to the Farmers’ Market
To cook great tasting meals at home you’ll need quality produce. Make it a point in 2019 to make more trips to your local farmers’ market with your family. This is a great way to get your family involved, save money, and support your local growers.

We’ve been serving up smiles across the Triangle for decades. Call us today and see why we’re an award winning catering company in Cary NC.
Drones and GoPros
Drones could be a really big trend this year for professional wedding photographers. Using a drone will allow you to capture every angle possible of your wedding and reception. The aerial shots of your wedding will definitely set your video and pictures apart from all the standard and boring set shots. Another idea we just love is getting in on the GoPro craze. Attach one of these mini-cameras to a selfie-stick and you have the perfect mobile photo booth. You can get extremely creative with a GoPro and use them extensively during the reception.
If you really do not have money in your budget for a wedding DJ, or band, how about going DIY with Spotify? Spotify is software that you download on to a computer, tablet, or smartphone that allows users to connect to thousands of songs from their favorite artists. You can easily create your own playlists so you can hear exactly what you want at your wedding, all you need is a sound system and somewhere to plug in your device. Spotify Premium can be purchased for $9.99 a month and then your playlists won’t be reliant on Wi-Fi. If you think planning your music will be a chore, then crowdsource from your family and friends for songs you should play – just be sure to mix in some of your own favorites.
There’s an App for That
Long gone are the days of having to have all of your bridesmaids together to complete your DIY wedding tasks. Lots of brides are now using planning and organizing apps like TaskRabbit that can help you get all the little things taken care of. Another great app for brides and grooms to consider is TouristEye, it can help plan your honeymoon itinerary. Also consider ride services like Uber and Lyft. Uber and Lyft can sometimes be cheaper for your out-of-town guests than taking taxis.

We had the lovely pleasure of displaying some of our favorites from our very own wedding menu over the weekend at Bed Bath & Beyond’s Rock Your Registry Event at their Cary, NC location at Crossroads Plaza. We were one of a select group of local vendors and corporate manufacturing reps that helped to answer all of the questions that the lucky brides and grooms had about making their big day, and new life, fabulous. Catering By Design was lucky enough to be chosen as the only food caterer at this year’s event with Gigi’s Cupcakes and The Freezing Pointe providing all of the sweet treats. I had a chance to sample the homemade Coffee Bean Crunch ice cream from The Freezing Pointe, and let me tell you, even on a cold night in January the ice cream was a huge hit with the entire crowd. Be sure to keep them in mind for a unique way to have dessert at your wedding.
The registry event was truly rocking with a DJ playing great tunes as the happy couples competed in a dance-off for some amazing door prizes including Mikasa place settings and a Dyson vacuum cleaner.
We sprinkled this post with a few of our favorite pictures from Sunday night’s event, but to see the entire gallery, you’ll have to follow us on Pinterest. Also, don’t forget to like us on Facebook. We’re always sharing helpful tips for arts and crafts, recipes, and fun family events that are easy on the budget.
For the registry, we started out the guests on the lighter side with a beautiful array of Chilled Marinated Grilled Vegetables, with breads and gourmet crackers.
Then the guests moved down to our homemade Hummus, Tomato Basil and Hot Roasted Red Pepper Chicken Dips that were served with a variety of Crispy Crostini, Crackers and Pita Points.
On the heavier side, we served some of our most requested menu items. Our Parmesan Crusted Chicken Bites with Apricot Mustard Sauce are always a big hit and the miniature Crab Cakes with Lemon Aioli had the crowd coming back for seconds, and even thirds.
The star of our show was the Beef Wrapped Portobellos with Sesame Ginger Glaze. This heavy appetizer is one of our biggest crowdpleasers. I’m glad we were prepared for the hungry brides and grooms because we almost ran out of the tasty morsels. Just goes to prove how our food really speaks for itself.
World Class Cary Wedding Catering
There is a reason we’re considered the best of the Cary wedding catering companies, and that’s because of our top notch customer services, affordable menus and great food and flavors. Brides, we offer FREE menu tastings whereas some of our competitors charge for this service. We let our food speak for us so come on down and schedule your tasting today.
A lot of people like to ring in the New Year by having a traditional meal filled with foods that are supposed to bring good luck, health and fortune. We put together a list of our favorite good luck foods that you should prepare for your New Year’s feast. If you want to take this year off and spend more time with your family and friends, call Catering By Design and let us do all the work. Our Cary event catering menus are affordable and perfect for any size New Year’s party, large or small.
Greens – Greens are traditionally eaten on New Year’s Eve because of their color. Green, after all, is the color of money. Collard, mustard, and turnip greens are all acceptable, and yummy.
Beans And Peas – People also eat beans and peas for good fortune because they symbolize coins. In the United States, black-eyed peas are the traditional choice for New Year’s Eve.
Lentils – Lentils could have been grouped with the beans and pea category above but we chose to give them their own few lines. When you cook lentils, they plump up with water and this symbolizes growing wealth. They are also considered to be a good luck food in Hungary where they are typically used in soup recipes.
Noodles and Grains – Most noodles are long in length. This is a symbol for long life. In some cultures, slurping the noodles can even bring more good luck. Grains, like rice and barley symbolize abundance.
Cornbread – People eat cornbread on New Year’s Eve because of its golden color. Some people even add extra kernels of corn to represent golden nuggets.
Pork – Lots of people eat ham on New Year’s Eve because pigs are plump and they root forward.
Fruit – On New Year’s Eve in Mexico, people will eat a grape for each stroke of the clock at midnight. This represents each month of the year and if one of the grapes is sour or bitter then you’ll need to watch out for that month. Other lucky fruits include eating figs for healthy fertility and pomegranate seeds for prosperity.
Cake – For dessert, let them eat ring shaped cakes. Ring shaped cakes represent coming full circle.

The holidays are a magical time for most, but for some, they can be a hard and lonely time. As one of the top Cary catering companies, we hope that if you can this year, you decide to donate your money, time or unused canned goods and non-perishable food items to one of North Carolina’s many deserving nonprofit organizations. All across North Carolina, there will be families this holiday season that will not be able to even provide a hot meal for their loved ones. With your help, we can help change all of this.
Cary Catering Companies Helping The Less Fortunate
Donations of canned food, time and money are all appreciated at any of the fine locations listed above. Even if you cannot volunteer your time to help one of the organizations, there are still lots of other ways you can help out. You can organize a food drive, or several food drives. Have one at your office by setting up a few boxes in the break room, front office, or other gathering areas with a simple sign explaining the idea of collecting food for donations. Have a community food drive and encourage all of your neighbors to pitch in. Post a message on your community’s bulletin board, or contact your homeowner’s association and ask them for assistance. Maybe they can send out an email on your behalf with all the details of the event. If you have children, help them plan a food drive at school. You could talk to their teachers and principal for ideas on the best way to implement it so that all the students can be involved. The best items are canned vegetables, fruits and meats, peanut butter, pastas, baking ingredients and condiments such as ketchup and mustard.
This holiday season, we hope you find a way to give back to your community and help the less fortunate. We hope other Cary catering companies take notice of this post and follow our lead. We love giving back and helping others.
In North Carolina, we are actually pretty crazy about our hockey. We’re so excited about another Carolina Hurricanes season and being big Caniacs! We get a lot of mild weather here in Caniac Country and that allows for some unique tailgating opportunities. Fans from opposing teams in colder climates are amazed at how our fans cook up feasts for hockey, like they do for other, more popular tailgates, like football. If you want to host a tailgate party, or have a hockey party at your home we can help. Catering By Design provides top notch Raleigh, Durham, and Cary event catering for all sporting events. Whether you need us to cook it all up and drop it off, or you want a full service catered affair, we can provide the best game day experience you and your fan friends have ever seen. The best part of our full service catering is that we do all the work. We cook the food, serve it, and clean up afterwards. That means you get to enjoy the game and be with your friends and family. If you want to host your own hockey party, here are some great food ideas to make sure your guests are happy, win or lose.
Pizza Pizza – Pizza is by far the easiest hockey party food to serve. Pizza is a great last minute option for your vegetarian friends. Pizza is also reliable because, who doesn’t like pizza? Take a look in your newspaper, or online for coupons to your favorite local pizza joint. You can make your own of course, but this could take a lot of time depending on your head count.
Nachos – Another great hockey party food is nachos. This is a staple at every hockey arena in the country. Nachos are easy to make and you can create an interactive nacho bar with lots of great toppings. This is also another great idea for vegetarian friends attending your game. You can serve several different types of toppings including different types of salsas, chips, cheeses, meats, veggies, and don’t forget the jalapenos. If you really want to get creative, serve some mini quesadillas.
Buffalo Wings – This might be my personal favorite game day food, period. No matter what sport you’re tailgating for, buffalo wings will be hit. You can go big, bold and spicy or keep it mild, sweet and smokey. Or, all of the above. If you’re going to serve something really spicy, make sure to have something mild for those that cannot handle the heat. Be sure to have plenty of napkins and hand wipes for your guests as wings can get a little messy.
Don’t Forget The Beer – No hockey party is complete without beer – just make sure to drink responsibly and have some nonalcoholic beverages as well.
